Connecting with seniors through technology, the Community Access Program

Shortly after moving to Kimberley, I was hired by the College of the Rockies Kimberley Campus to teach computer courses to seniors. It is a passion of mine to help people use technology to stay connected with loved ones. My private practice tagline has always been: Locking Hearts Together.

Shaw TV visited the campus and they caught me in the act of teaching a computers basics class about photo's and computers.

Here is the segment that they produced (hope you enjoy me little dance):

Representing Kimberley, BC during the evacuation alert

I have been able to represent the city many in the media. One of those times was during the evacuation alert. I responded positively to over 10 different media requests for interviews. Here are some of the highlights. Live Interview with CBC News Interview with CBC News Interview with Global BC Kimberley resident Josh Lockhart told Global News he is packing up three kids, a dog and a bird to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. He said there is definitely an uneasy and unsettling feeling in the city Friday morning. “You’re supposed to go about things as usual because it is just an alert, but at the same time you have to be ready to pick up and go at any point,” he said. “We’re trying to prepare as much as possible and get everything ready to go.” Lockhart said they are packing the things that cannot be easily replaced, like photos and memorable clothes – things of sentimental value. A community meeting was held two nights ago, which Lockhart attende...

Kimberley, BC is an apocalyptically good place to be!

As Emergency BC's tagline says: "If you're ready for zombies, you're ready for a disaster" and after reading The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, I've come to realize that Kimberley is a good place to be, even if a zombie apocalypse should strike. Here's why! Zombies typically operate like water, taking the path of least resistance. According to Brooks mountains are the second most desirable place to live during a zombie apocalypse. He emphasizes the higher the elevation the better, so fortunately Kimberley is very well situated, being the highest city in Canada! Brooks also recommends cooler climates, so our modestly frigid winter temperatures could freeze those zombies in their tracks, or at least our abundance of snow would make things difficult for them to tread through. We are lucky too that Kimberley is hidden away nicely on highway 95A, surrounded by slopes, and concealed by trees. Plus, there is plenty of wildlife out there! Fleeing bi...

Working together as a community

I have always believed in working together instead of against each other. Hear are just a couple of examples: Summer 2012, summer camp program at College of the Rockies : “We are thrilled to be partnered with Centre 64, Kimberley Gymnastics, Kimberley Dance Academy and Kimberley Summer Theatre to offer these exciting summer camps,” commented Josh Lockhart, Kimberley Campus Program Assistant. “Collaborating with community groups gives us the opportunity to enhance the camp experience tremendously.” Starting the community registration days in 2012 (this ran until 2016 - something I would like to restart): College of the Rockies (COTR) Program Assistant Josh Lockhart says, “There has been a lot of enthusiasm for the event so far. We have many businesses and groups signed up and are seeing new ones coming on board every day. Not only is this a great opportunity for businesses and groups to interact with the public but it also gives them the chance to build relationships ...
